Have you ever wondered what Halloween is all about?
Halloween is a yearly celebration on October 31st where people usually children dress in costumes and solicit candy or other treats door-to-door. It is also know as “All Hallow ‘s Eve”.
How did it come about and who thought about it?
It all started as a religious practice of the Romans and Druids. They worshiped various gods on October 31st(a special feast held in honor of Pomona- goddess of fruit trees) and they also honored samhain -lord of the dead on November 1st.They believed that they were surrounded by strange spirits, ghosts, witches, fairies and cats who came to hurt them.
What about trick or treat?
It originated a century ago in Ireland. Irish farmers went from house to house, begging for food in the name of their ancient gods , to be used at the village Halloween celebration. They promised good luck to those who gave them and made threats to those who refused. They said “you treat me, or else I will trick you”.
The pumpkin or jack-o-lanterns
It is an Irish symbol of damned soul. A man named Jack was unable to enter Heaven due to miserliness and unable to enter hell because he played jokes on the devil. As a result, he was condemned to wander over the earth with his lantern until judgment day(i.e the end of the world). The Irish were afraid ,that they began to hollow out pumpkins and placed lighted candles inside to scare away evil spirits.
What did the Christians have to say about this?
Instead of honoring gods, they honor dead saints. For this reason, November 1st is known as “Day of all saints” and the eve of this day is known as “All hallowed evening”.
